Why L.E.K.?
L.E.K. provides a great offer to recent graduates. Whilst providing the generic benefits of the consulting industry: diversity of work, range of clients and the steep learning curve, there are a number of factors that set L.E.K. apart from competitors.
L.E.K. has been undergoing rapid growth over the last 5 years which has seen many opportunities arise for people working in the firm. I have been given a lot of responsibility and challenges which I have enjoyed. Despite the growth, the atmosphere within the firm however remains very friendly and approachable. It is a great group of people to work and socialise with. Due to L.E.K. having a reasonably short average case duration this gives you exposure to a range of clients and industries a lot faster than a number of our competitors. The ability to ‘swap’ with a colleague from another office for 6 months is a great way to experience a different work style.
We also often operate with small case teams, which means that you feel that you are making an important impact to the client.
My Role
In my first few years at L.E.K., I have experienced a range of tasks from research to analysis and communication. Throughout my time at L.E.K. my role has been constantly evolving as I have become more experienced. Initially I spent a lot of time doing research (both primary and secondary) trying to find the most relevant information and summarising this into a manageable format for the rest of the team and completing simple analysis. Gradually you will start doing more complex analysis and eventually you will build quite sophisticated financial models.
How I have communicated the information / output also evolves over time, initially I received support in constructing slides, the next phase had me being responsible for designing and completing slides myself and more recently I have become responsible for designing slides for others and managing a team to capture and distil the relevant information.
You are also given a lot of responsibility both in terms of client interactions, providing guidance and support to more junior team members and driving the case process forward as you become more senior. Which I have enjoyed.
Professional Development
I have had many varied experiences at L.E.K. Some of the highlights have been:
- Completing over 25 projects in my two and a half years at LEK. They have been in a range of diverse industries. Some of the industries I have worked on have included: retail, sports and media, agriculture, building products, transport, healthcare and mining
- I have worked for a range of clients including: government, private and publically listed companies across a range of project types: strategy cases, due diligence (both buy and sell side) and performance improvement cases (these are generally more focused on operational improvements)
- I have also worked in projects in a range of locations: Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and London
- Trying (and failing) every week to bring some success to the L.E.K. indoor football team.
